case study

ADS-B Exchange

Following a recommendation from fellow JETNET group company WINGX, ADS-B Exchange partnered with Pad to reposition its website and evolve its brand identity. The project helped transform a community-led aviation platform into a compelling proposition for enterprise customers while remaining true to the values that built its success.

What our client said...

Working with the Pad team on the new ADS-B Exchange website was a genuine pleasure from start to finish. They took the time to understand our brief and the technical nature of what we do, and translated it into a site that's clean, credible, and far easier for our audience to navigate.

About ADS-B Exchange

ADS-B Exchange delivers real-time and historical visibility into aircraft movements worldwide. Powered by the world’s largest independent ADS-B receiver network, it collects flight data directly from aircraft through thousands of community-operated receivers, providing comprehensive and transparent visibility into global aviation activity. From aviation professionals and developers to researchers and enthusiasts, ADS-B Exchange helps users monitor, analyse and better understand what’s happening in the skies.

The Challenge

ADS-B Exchange had grown far beyond its origins as a hobby project. What began as a community-driven flight-tracking platform had become a trusted source of aviation data for businesses, researchers and media organisations worldwide.

The challenge was to support this evolution without losing sight of the volunteer contributor network at the heart of the platform’s success. We needed to create a website that reinforced ADS-B Exchange’s commitment to openness and transparency, celebrated the community that powers its uniquely rich dataset, and clearly communicated the value of its commercial data and API services to an enterprise audience.

Our Approach

With multiple audiences and competing priorities to balance, we knew success would depend on getting the strategy right before moving into design. We began with an extensive discovery and planning phase, mapping user journeys, auditing existing content and refining the site architecture.

This allowed us to create a structure that supported enterprise lead generation without losing sight of the contributors, developers and members whose participation underpins the success of the platform.

By validating messaging and navigation through wireframes early in the process, we built consensus across stakeholders, reduced risk during development and ensured the final website delivered on both commercial and community objectives.

The Solution

The new website positions ADS-B Exchange as both a trusted aviation data provider and a thriving community-driven platform. Through clear messaging, intuitive navigation and dedicated user journeys, it communicates the value of the organisation’s products without losing sight of the people who make them possible.

Enterprise users can quickly understand ADS-B Exchange’s data offerings, evaluate their relevance and take the next step towards enquiry. Meanwhile, contributors, developers and members are reassured that the platform’s commitment to openness, transparency and community remains unchanged.

The website also serves as a gateway to ADS-B Exchange’s highly popular flight-tracking map, which receives around 75 million views per month. We created clear signposting and calls to action throughout the site, helping users seamlessly transition between learning about ADS-B Exchange’s data products and experiencing the richness of that data through the interactive map itself.

The result is a website that aligns with ADS-B Exchange’s ambitions today while providing a strong foundation for future growth.

Working with the Pad team on the new ADS-B Exchange website was a genuine pleasure from start to finish. They took the time to understand our brief and the technical nature of what we do, and translated it into a site that's clean, credible, and far easier for our audience to navigate. Communication was consistently clear, deadlines were respected, and they were responsive whenever we wanted to refine an idea.

What stood out most was how closely the final result tracked the original brief – nothing felt diluted along the way, and in several places they elevated our thinking beyond what we'd asked for. The quality of the end product speaks for itself. I'd happily work with Pad again and recommend them without hesitation to anyone in the aviation sector looking for a partner who actually listens.
